Abstract

The geriatric syndromes are a non-clinical condition in the elderly characterized by multiple causes that includes a group of signs and symptoms that are presented together in a variable way, usually with a multifactorial cause and a heterogeneous background. Their detection and diagnosis can help reduce functional impairment and loss of independence that can be seen in older adults. In addition, it allows the clinician to prioritize strategies and actions to achieve healthy aging in order to provide a better quality of life in this population. Due to the high prevalence and increase in the elderly population globally, in this review of the emphasis will be placed on the epidemiology, etiology, clinical characteristics, diagnosis, prevention and management of different geriatric syndromes with the aim of providing useful information for early and effective  diagnosis, as well as their management focused mainly on: falls, incontinence and cognitive impairment.
