Knowledge about the harmfulness of smoking in Students of the Antonio Maceo Pre-university Center, Cuba 2020-2021

Abstract
Despite the growing awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and the increase in preventive programs, tobacco consumption remains a top-priority issue in global public health. This study aimed to enhance understanding of the harmful effects of smoking habits among students at Antonio Maceo Pre-university Center, Cuba, during January 2020-2021. Methods: A quantitative research with a pre-experimental design was conducted, including pre- and post-intervention tests. The focus was on modifying knowledge about the harmful effects of smoking habits among students at Antonio Maceo Pre-university Center, located in the municipality of Taguasco, Sancti Spiritus Province, during the mentioned period. Results: Out of the total students, 67.5% were female. Regarding knowledge about the chemical components released when a cigarette is lit, only 17.5% of students demonstrated adequate levels of knowledge. Regarding diseases associated with smoking habits, it is noteworthy that the adequate knowledge level increased from 40% before the intervention to 100% after it. Conclusions: The intervention proved effective in increasing knowledge about the harmful effects of smoking habits among students, positively influencing adolescents' attitudes toward tobacco consumption.
