Evolution of mortality by age, sex, causes and geographical distribution in people aged 65 or older in Costa Rica, 1970-2014

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the evolution of mortality according to age groups, sex, regional, cantonal and provincial distribution, determining the causes of death involved in people aged 65 and over in Costa Rica, during the period 1970-2014.
Methodology: It is an observational, descriptive, transversal investigation. Secondary data was obtained from the database of the “Centro Centroamericano de Población” and the “Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos”, using the codes of the International Classification of Diseases VIII, IX and X. With the population and mortality, the respective rates were calculated. The STATA package was used to process the information. Obtaining the map by cantons was done using the GeoDA maps program. Results: The mortality of adults over 65-year-old had a tendency to decrease, with higher rates for males and the three main causes of death were cardiovascular diseases, cancer and respiratory diseases. Proportional mortality of 50 and more years went from 41% in 1970 to 81% in 2014 and mortality of 65 and over in the same period, from 30% to 65%. The provinces with the highest rates were Puntarenas and Limón. In the same sense, the cantons with the highest rates were Garabito and Montes de Oro, both from Puntarenas. Conclusions: the aging of the Costa Rican population has determined a transfer of mortality to the most advanced age groups, with the highest mortality in the male sex.
