Spatio-temporal variations of rape in Costa Rica: A statistical analysis with SaTScan™

Abstract
Objective: To investigate spatial and spatio-temporal clusters and seasonal variability of rape in Costa Rica. Methodology: A retrospective analysis of rape data reported annually to the Ministry of Justice and Peace of the Government of Costa Rica was conducted over a twelve-year period, starting in 2010. All 82 cantons of Costa Rica were included and geocoded for this study. Spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal scanning spatial statistics were used to identify rape clusters. Smoothing was applied to obtain the moving average to analyze trends and seasonal patterns of rape. Microsoft Excel and SaTScan software were used for statistical analysis. Maps were plotted in R. Results: The most significant spatial clusters of rape were located in the Caribbean zone of Costa Rica (RR=2.13, p < 0.001), and the most significant spatio-temporal clusters were located in the southern Caribbean zone of Costa Rica (RR=2.46, p < 0.001) between 2010 and 2015; San José (RR=1. 98, p < 0.001) between 2010 and 2015; Nicoya Gulf area (RR=2.23, p < 0.001) between 2012 and 2016; Heredia (RR=2.11, p < 0.001) between 2014 and 2015; La Union de Cartago (RR=2.29, p < 0.001) between 2017 and 2019; the south-central Pacific (RR=2.36, p < 0.001) in 2010 and the northern Guanacaste area (RR=1.94, p = 0.003) between 2010 and 2011. Conclusions: Rape in Costa Rica did not occur randomly. There was spatiotemporal variation and seasonal patterns with decreasing temporal trends.
