Abstract
Alcoholic myocarditis is a type of non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy induced by ethanol. Objectives: To determine the mortality and disease burden of alcoholic myocarditis in Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Cuba and Panama from 2000 to 2019. Methods: A database was created with information from the Institute of Health Metrics based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), using standardised rates to determine disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life with disability (YLD), incidence and mortality of alcoholic myocarditis by sex and age for the period 2000 to 2019. Results: It was shown that DALYs and YLD due to alcoholic myocarditis were found in some countries with a high trend or were maintained over time; however, the highest rates were found in Cuba. The highest rates were found in men. Conclusions: Alcoholic myocarditis is a preventable disease if excessive consumption can be stopped from an early age, the male sex was most affected, the country with the highest rates was Cuba, followed by Chile and Costa Rica, so primary prevention should be strengthened and strategies to reduce alcohol consumption implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) should be implemented, as this has become a public health problem.
