Abstract

Cancer is an increasingly common pathology that generates high levels of physical, emotional, and psychosocial strain on those who suffer from it, as well as significant economic costs for healthcare services. Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass, strength, and function of multifactorial etiology, is a poor prognostic factor in oncology patients. This condition impacts variables such as post-surgical hospital readmissions, prolonged stays, impaired healing processes, and reduced quality of life and functionality. This article provides an updated review of the topic and emphasizes the importance of identifying patients at high risk of developing sarcopenia in order to implement early measures and timely treatment plans.
