Evaluation of health promotion in companies affiliated to the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica

Abstract
The workplace is considered an ideal setting to conduct diet and lifestyle interventions to prevent non-communicable chronic diseases, the main cause of death and disability in Latin America (1-3. The objective of this study was to evaluate the status of health promotion at work among companies affiliated to the Camara de Industrias de Costa Rica. Methods: An electronic survey that inquired about the infrastructure and health promotion strategies in place was sent to 765 companies affiliated to the Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica. A total of 224 companies (29.4%) responded: n=126 micro and small (<30 employees), n=44 medium (30 to 100 employees) and large (> 100 employees). Results: Less than 38% of micro and small companies and <55% of medium and large companies reported having assessed diet, obesity, stress, or posture problems. Sick leave was considered the main cause of absenteeism: 53% in micro and small 65.9% in medium and 70.9% in large companies. The causes of absenteeism that were considered most frequent were due to muscle (7.9-27.3%) or digestive (10.3-23.6%) problems, while absenteeism due to mental health or chronic diseases was lower, <8%. Medium and large companies reported having green areas (54%), sports facilities (24%), gym (14%), swimming pool (8%), company physician (70%), as well as nutritional (30%) and psychological (15%) services, and private insurance (40%). Conclusions: There is a large gap in the facilities and access to health promotion programs among the evaluated companies.
